    The subject of this thesis is synchronous transfer in the world telecommunication public network, focusing on a detailed description of SDH technology from the internet service provider's point of view. The main objective is to provide an optimal implementation of available technologies and their (combined) usage in the network, centering on the functionality, price and expected development of those technologies in the future. In the beginning the source of SDH technology, its functionality and applications are presented, describing the advantages of its predecessor PDH (Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy). More detailed explanation is provided for the most important parts of SDH, such synchronization, structure, protection and management. Tusmobil's network is taken as an example, describing the plans of future upgrades and consequences that those will bring.
