Luka Lampret (2012) EMG data warehouse with excel-based visual analytics. EngD thesis.
Abstract
The aim of the thesis was to demonstrate that a state-of-the-art solution for management and analytical visualization of data can be implemented based on Excel 2010. We used a large and complex database of measurements of electrical activity in uterine smooth muscles during pregnancy in an animal model (pregnant sheep). The thesis comprises two parts. The first part fully exploits the functionalities of the latest version of Excel – ranging from advanced formulas through controls and VBA code to sparklines – for graphing measurements according to the user's demand. In the second part, we used the PowerPivot add-in to overcome the limitations and implement interactivity in Excel's charts, which enabled us to combine all the data in one file and manipulate them effortlessly. In this way, we produced an OLAP application that takes into account all the relations within the data and efficiently implements high-quality visual analytics using Excel's charts.
