Andraž Glavan (2012) Economic and performance aspects of data storage in the clouds. EngD thesis.
Abstract
The thesis treats today's very popular topic: cloud computing. The aim was to evaluate cost-effectiveness of cloud data storage as well as it's performance in term of speed and throughput. In the introduction the topic is briefly presented. The services which are important for small to medium size companies are discussed, especially services concerning data storage. Furthermore, the thesis describes in detail the cloud computing and summarizes brief history of its development. It also describes the cloud computing service models. Then a variety of information that can be stored in the cloud is presented, especially for small to medium size businesses. Author limits himself primarily to transaction data and documents in electronic form. A test program to measure the speed and responsiveness of the database was developed. Cost and performance for commercially available cloud solution was compared to local server solution. Second group of comparison was performed between some popular public domain storage solutions to local network storage. Cost, speed and data throughput were analyzed. At the end the author exposes the most appropriate provider from economic and performance perspective. In the final part of the thesis the key findings on what one should have in mind when deciding between cloud and local solutions for data storage are presented. The author also gives his opinion on the transfer of data into the cloud for specific business systems.
