Nadja Ostrožnik (2012) The role of geographic information systems in companies. EngD thesis.
Abstract
Geographic information systems are becoming a widely used tool when arranging, managing, analysing, modelling, introducing and presenting geographical data. Nevertheless, they are still rather unknown or used only within individual professions. The purpose of this diploma paper is to present basic areas of geographic information systems. First, the most important part of the geographic information systems is presented, that is the data and the way how to acquire them. That is followed by a description of basic analyses which are the foundation of every work that includes geographic data and tools that are used when dealing with them. A considerable part of my diploma paper deals with the presentation of different GIS projects, Slovenian as well as foreign. These projects show how useful geographic information systems are in everyday life and try to bring these systems closer to an average person. Finally, there is a chapter dedicated to online GISs, which are now becoming more and more popular.
