    Abstract

This work is an overview of the role of computer technology in dance. As in other creative areas, information technology has influenced also on how dance is recorded, taught and learned. A short historical overview of how dance notation has evolved and how the process of notation can be supported by computers is given. We are especially interested in how computer based solutions can facilitate learning of dance. Many attempts of using computers for dance instruction on a base and advanced level are presented. The key element of such systems is the capture of 3D movement. In the practical part of this work, we tested one existing system for the recording of the dancer’s movement. The technologies for the capture of a dancer’s movement are at this point still quite complex and expensive, but the technological development goes in this direction. This enables completely new methods of dance instruction using computer instruction or a human instructor over distance in a virtual environment.
