The purpose of the following thesis is to compare existing approaches, methodologies and tools for ontology development as well as for its usage. Ontologies were exploited in computer science to enhance knowledge sharing and reuse. At the beginning of this thesis onotologies are described, the connection between ontology development and knowledge management is presented, and the vision of the Semantic Web is introduced. In addition ontology languages and their chronological development are described. The thesis continues with description of methodologies for building ontologies, their approaches and included development processes. Evaluation framework with criteria which are used to compare methodologies is defined and data based on this criteria is collected. The criteria referring to ontology development processes are based on IEEE 1074-1995 standard for software development process. The comparison of methodologies is performed in DEXi program which enables comparison of variants based on evaluation framework. Similar to methodologies some tools for building ontologies are described. Furthermore the evaluation framework with the list of criteria for tool comparision is established, as well as the data about the tools is collected. The comparision is made with DEXi program. The thesis concludes with an example of ontology implemented within best evaluated tools regarding to described criteria - OntoStudio and Protégé. Two reports from DEXi describing the results of methodologies and tools comparision are included in attachments.
