Mojca Črnigoj (2016) Web application for learning and practicing braille. EngD thesis.
Abstract
Even the blind and partially sighted people need tools to communicate with others. For this purpose, they use Braille, which is perfectly adapted to their needs and abilities. Things get complicated, when you add computer into the equation. It is largely useless as long as it does not run programs that are specially adapted for use by the visually impaired. Even just reading and entering the statistical information can be very difficult, because the screen lose the primary role of the element that provides information. An application that is the subject of this thesis, is trying to add one more tool to the process of cognition and learning Braille characters. It is partly made for seeing people that do not know the needs and problems of the world of blind, but mostly is intended for the visually impaired, just entering the path of learning. To them it offers learning Braille as a script for blind, explains its origins and rules offers a basic translation from the black print into Braille and vice versa. For those that adhere to learning more seriously, offers games through which they can further consolidate their knowledge. In doing so, it reinforces both the knowledge of Braille as well as the input method, which corresponds to the sign of Braille. The application allows the teacher to participate in the process of consolidation. It is possible to edit which words the students are working with, how much time and how many trials are available for answers, it also makes a statistic through which both the learner and the teacher obtain insight into learner’ progress.
