Črt Ambrožič (2012) Establishment and use of wireless networks Eduroam and Libroam in the National and university library. EngD thesis.
Abstract
The purpose of the thesis is to describe the installation, operation and use of the academic wireless network Eduroam and library wireless network Libroam at the National and University Library in Ljubljana. The first part focuses on development and characteristics of wireless communication and networking with a special emphasis on local wireless networks, describing the compatibility standards for wireless connections and highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of local wireless networks. The next part describes the configuration, development and architecture of the Eduroam wireless network and a similar network Libroam, which connects Slovenian libraries and provides roaming possibilities similar to Eduroam. A detailed account of the project of setting-up the Eduroam and Libroam networks at the National and University Library is given, including the applied technological solutions as well as suggestions for future improvements and simplifications that would facilitate the use of both networks by library users. The empirical part describes the results of the survey on the usage of wireless networks at the National and University Library and provides explanation for their low levels of use. The survey was conducted among library users that already use the wireless networks as well as those that do not. Complementing the results is the analysis of written interviews of library specialists at the National and University Library, who are engaged in user services or are responsible for the functioning of wireless networks. On the basis of survey results and the interviews, the conclusion describes the necessary improvements to existing wireless infrastructure of Eduroam and Libroam networks, as well as to the support offered to its users.
