    Abstract

In the world of public key cryptography elliptic curve cryptosystem, also known as EC cryptosystem is gaining momentum. It is becoming a serious alternative to today's most popular public key cryptosystem RSA The goal of this graduate thesis was to produce a comparison of average response times of a web server with SSL protocol using digital certificates of different key sizes of both cryptosystems. For this reason a computer application that could measure response time of each request to a web server was constructed. Workload tests have been executed for each of the software supported cryptosystem key sizes and afterwards results analysis followed. As it turns out EC cryptosystem proved to be faster than RSA at longer key sizes which was in accordance with theoretical analysis. However RSA was the faster one at shorter key sizes. The cause for that might lie in less optimized EC algorithms. For a more detailed comparison of the two cryptosystems all of the response time tests would have been required. That was due to the software limitations impossible to produce.
