Anže Mis (2009) The development of an application for financial controlling by the use of QlikView toolset. EngD thesis.
Abstract
Nowadays organizations realize the importance of IT investments. Until now the focus has been mainly directed at the development of information systems for gathering data. Now the collected data need to be analyzed. Business intelligence systems (BI) are becoming more popular, because they offer platforms with capabilities far beyond traditional querying and static reporting. Solutions are continuously being updated to take full advantage of hardware capabilities. Growth of technology offers “in memory” OLAP implementations to improve their analytical response times. The goal of this thesis is to present QlikView, show its innovative data model based on associative query logic (AQL) and to build an application for finance controlling. At the beginning classical OLAP approach and its architecture is described. Its main problems are exposed and alternative solutions with “in memory” analysis described. The main part of this thesis is dedicated to QlikView. Some of its most powerful features are introduced. Later on theory about dashboards is included as they are indispensable in every business intelligence application. QlikView server architecture provides opportunity for clients to connect and analyze data no matter what operating system they are running on. With QlikView Publisher highly integrated security can be provided, while reloaded and authorized data can be distributed to the end users. The last part of thesis defines the structure for account schedules, which are necessary for displaying the main charts in application for finance controlling. With the dashboard design the big advantage of using the set analysis feature is also demonstrated. The thesis concludes with the short forecast and improvements plan for the application and QlikView.
