    Abstract

This thessis is presenting a technology of the free space optics. A fast and reliable communication is very important in today’s world. The free space optical communication is just one among many possibilities of point to point communication; however it still has a lot of choices to research and upgrade in the future. Basic widgets, that are needed for establish a connection are described in this thesis. FSO units are shown with their transmitters and receivers. There is also a list of factors, which have a direct influence on a data transfer. Weather influences are in particular emphasized, because they mostly impact the quality of the data transfer. Members of the Optical communications group of TU Graz tested the majority of the intoduced theories. Their most important tests are captured in three groups, presented with three different installations. Differences between installations are in FSO units, length of connections, enviroment and added equipments. The most important among them is the 2.7 km long connection between the university and the observatory. On this connection they carried out the most important tests and it is still used for further research. All gained knowledge is used in feasibility study of setting up free space optical connections between some faculties in Ljubljana. Physical characteristics of buildings, barriers between them and local wheather conditions are gathered. Some tehnical features of the set up and FSO units considering current trends are also suggested.
