Andrej Krota (2010) Electrical power management within virtual laboratory. EngD thesis.
Abstract
The popularty of cloud computing is increasing among the users who want to have permanent access to some online resurce (both hardware and software) from any location. Therefore online resources must be always available, but they are not necessarily always well utilized. Bad resource utilization causes unnecessary costs and negative envinronmental impacts. The thesis presents a computer program I designed to work with the Virtual Computing Lab at the Faculty of Computer and Information Science. In the introduction the concept of cloud computing and virtualization technology, as a fundamental building block for cloud computing is presented. Then the Virtual Computing Lab follows as an example of such cloud. The main part of the thesis is dedicated to a program, which manages the available resources in the cloud so there are not unutilized resources. This increases available resource utilization while minimizing cost for running such a cloud. The usefulness of the program is supported by measurements, simulations and calculations based on real usage data of the above mentioned study cloud. The final conclusion in the thesis shows the significant reduce of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emmisions by the use of the program in the VCL, which contributes to preserve environment.
