    Abstract

In the diploma thesis I first show the development of geographical information systems throughout history. I then describe the technologies which constitute a geographical information system, the ways of possible use and the type of data available. The possibility of creating and saving the data is also present. The second part of the thesis contains the current status of the geographical information system used in the company and the currently used methods of data collection. The need for easier, faster and quality data collection has led me to research about the process of recording and updating geographical data with mobile technology. The increase of availability and daily use of geographical information systems has increased the demand for accurate and up to date information transfer. The advance of telecommunications services and mobile devices has increased the on field use of geographical information systems and influenced new ways of collecting and maintaining data. It is fast and high quality data which represent time and money savings and an advantage at decision making.
