Matija Lovrić (2011) Introducing mouse gestures and functionality upgrades into classic user interface. EngD thesis.
Abstract
In addition to analyze the characteristics and present deficiencies in the Human-Computer interaction (HCI) area of the existing and popular graphical user interfaces of the most common operating systems in personal computers, the goal of this thesis is to propose an alternative path in their evolution, made feasible by using mouse gestures. The contents consist of two parts. First one disserts possible control upgrades within the GNU/Linux operating system and the second one explores that possibility in Windows. The GNU/Linux part presents hidden features of the Metacity window manager first, then binds them with gestures provided by the Easystroke program. The task of providing mouse gestures inside Windows environment is given to the StrokeIt program. In the end, its functionalities as well as the set of commonly available features of the operating system's whole graphical user interface are expanded and enriched with the help of scripts in the AutoIt computer language.
