    Abstract

    In the thesis we used protocols on Ethernet network's second layer. These protocols are Protocol Spanning Tree (STP), Transparent Interconnection of Lots of Links (TRILL) and Shortest Path Bridging (SPB) protocol. STP is the most widely used protocol in use today, while the remaining two protocols are newer and an alternative solution to replace the current STP. The protocols have been developed under the auspices of the IEEE (STD, STP) and IETF (TRILL). The purpose of these protocols is to ensure optimal performance of Ethernet networks. The assignment comprises of the presentation and functionality analysis of different Ethernet protocols in the second layer of the reference model ISO/OSI. It covers a comparison of the two most promising protocols, which could replace the primary one. The analysis of their benefits to the needs of today's networks leads to the conclusion that they are very similar as for their functionality, but regarding that SPD is generally easier installed, easier maintained and has the possibility of further functionality extensions, it is much more advantageous to replace the Spanning Tree Protocol than TRILL.
