Žiga Slavec (2011) Connecting medical devices with supportive health information system. EngD thesis.
Abstract
Integration of medical information systems is one of the key goals of medical informatics in recent times. Medical devices with their associated computer software are one of these systems. Integrating medical devices with support health information systems is on agenda in almost all larger companies involved in healthcare. International organizations and associations ensure standardization of protocols and messages within the area for information interchange. My thesis was motivated by use cases, delivered by HIS users. My main goal is the implementation of data transfer among various medical devices and HIS. The integration with medical devices is described in this document. First of all I reviewed the standards and best practices in field of IS integration. Therefore my writing starts with descriptions of international standards and currently widely accepted guidelines. Later I introduce two of well known associations related to HIS - medical device integration domain, founded in order to implement best practices. Chapter 5 describes integration project. Variability of information systems that support device manipulation and handling is main problem in developing integration. Despite all the problems, we have managed to set up a relevant architecture which is part by part described in this chapter. Further, the thesis describes the main implementation tasks and reviews the future work. Our first customer is proudly using our integration in practice. In conclusions, we overview what was done and what were the main problems we have encountered.
