Dejan Podbregar (2012) Development of a knowledge management system for the section occupational safety and health at work. EngD thesis.
Abstract
Large and medium-sized enterprises in the field of occupational health and safety at work use a variety of information technology to help them with their duties. Their work is limited to company data. In order to expand their view and help them to higher work quality, the thesis presents a knowledge management system. This links the information of enterprises that would choose such a system, and give them access to the information which is otherwise available at the Statistical Office or Chambers. The data is anonymous (origin unknown), therefore not legally challenged. This is the main condition that should be sufficient for the successful operation of the system. The thesis is built with a structural approach of EMRIS. The first two present the reader with fields covered in this thesis. Occupational Safety and Health at Work is a field in companies, which periodically all workers encounter. Medical examinations, personal protective equipment and risk assessment are only three of many tasks that safety engineers run in their departments. Their work and the legislative provisions are described in chapter one. I am continuing with the general description of knowledge management systems, a more thorough review of techniques and methods that appear or are important for better understanding of the thesis. Followed by a chapter on system development that is divided into phases of structural development. Thus, you will find various diagrams and models to help show you the evolution and operation of the knowledge management system. The system cannot exist without already present IT-solution for health and safety at work. Therefore, a knowledge management system for the section occupational health and safety at work is treated as a support system. As an existing information system for the thesis, an application – Konzola by Tref, Ltd. is used. The support knowledge management system enables users to view the statistics, classification, prediction and recommendations, which derive from the data of companies that use the system. Company data is transmitted on a common database server where data is transformed and processed to the final form of the information available to end users. The end result would help users to identify hazardous jobs, better facilitate their work with recommendations to increase knowledge about safety with findings of what and how certain parameters affect injuries and risk assessment. By comparing the results of the Bureau of Statistics and those of the thesis, I found that they are comparable, and that the system well reflects the real state.
