    Abstract

    Aircraft measure and monitor air pressure, temperature and winds all the time. These data are very useful for weather forecasting. In seventies organized collection via radio and satellite links was started under World Meteorological Organization. Unfortunately it is still limited to a few airline companies. New Mode-S radars are providing possibility to gather meteorological data. The path from aircraft via radar to air traffic control and further to meteorological agency was first established here in Slovenia. Analysis shows that measurements are of very good quality and have positive impact on short term forecasts. This example of acquiring and transmitting meteorological data via Mode-S radars shows an efficient cooperation between air navigation and meteorological services. Unfortunately it is not used elsewhere and we are promoting it because we believe there is a great potential for weather forecast improvements and air traffic safety on a global scale.
