Abstract

Sheltered housing is a modern alternative to institutionalised care for the elderly, which is traditionally carried out in nursing homes. It is a form of accommodation in an apartment, where medical personnel can help the resident in case of health problems or other accidents. Help is also provided in the form of other services chosen by the user and normally performed by a contractor. Sheltered housing normally consists of a series of dwellings in which the staff is present, and the emergency call of a resident can be triggered with the help of a remote located inside the apartment or carried by the resident. In Slovenia this form of accommodation is relatively new, which is why we tackled the questions of how these types of accommodation and services are defined abroad, how they are implemented, and whether it is possible to solve certain problems with the use of information and communication technologies. In our findings we propose two solutions, which differ in the type of construction (new development or renovation) and in the form of ownership.
