    Abstract

The thesis describes a smart house and the system that empowers it with intelligence. The goal of the thesis is to present the hardware and software involved and debate about the usability, pros and cons of such a system. The work addresses the smart house from several viewpoints: safety, comfort, economy, accessibility for people with special needs and affordability. Using smart house makes every day´s life more secure and comfortable, while it also enables independency to the people with special needs. After reviewing the offer on the Slovenian smart house market, the solutions offered by four different companies are summarized. For the present, market prices of smart houses are prohibitive to people with average incomes, except for the enthusiasts that have knowledge of programming the controller hardware. The main part of the thesis is devoted to the development of a smart house control system. Included is the description of the controller hardware, LON protocol and the source code with which the smart house project is realized. Customers that use the smart house for two months now are content with it. While the system is user friendly, there were no major problems in adaption to it.
