    Abstract

Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) are becoming an essential component of modern manufacturing companies. Until recently, manufacturers considered these systems to be an above standard option that is not essential for the successful development and functioning of the company. Nowadays, fewer and fewer companies still think this way. In a world of rapid changes and fierce competition, economic potential is not so much determined by the quality of the product as by the ability to rapidly adapt and master the manufacturing process. It is almost inconceivable that this could be achieved without the help of MES. The aim of this diploma project is to present MES and their place in the hierarchy of control systems in manufacturing companies. I will present the implementation and deployment of such a system in the company Acroni, more precisely in the Heavy Plate Department. I will describe the reasons which led to the decision to introduce MES and the expectations which accompanied it. The construction and deployment of MES were entrusted to the Process Automation Department. The system was constructed with the help of the application platform MADE, a product of the Slovenian company Metronik which greatly simplifies the construction of such a system. I will present the completed solutions, which address the reasons behind the demands for the introduction of MES. In order to find out how satisfied the users are with it, which after all is what is most important, a survey was carried out after the introduction of the system. I will present the users’ answers from which we can evaluate the success of the new system. As this was the first such project for the Process Automation Department, it was a source of invaluable experience which it will be able to make very good use of in the future. A similar MES is also being planned for the Cold Rolling Mill Department.
