Damjan Zajc (2009) The effects of routing and traffic filtering on the transfer speed in local area networks. EngD thesis.
Abstract
This thesis contains a theoretical and a practical section. The theoretical section describes computer networks. It describes their requirements for normal operation, the differences between different network types, and how data is exchanged among networked devices. We present protocols TCP and UDP, and their fields of use. This section also describes traffic routing, MTU, fragmentation principles, etc. The practical section contains a presentation of a network bandwidth measurment program. We present its operation, operational requirements, settings required and results produced by testing. Our program tests network speed (bandwidth) by using TCP and UDP protocols in relation to the number of rules applied to the firewall, and the size of the Ethernet frame. In the end, test results are explained, and presented in the form graphs rendered by the program.
