Matjaž Lovše (2013) Responsive web design. EngD thesis.
Abstract
The aim of the following thesis is to explore the scope of responsive web design with its optimization techniques in details and create a practical example that offers an optimal user experience on various devices. Due to the increased popularity of smart phones, tablets, and laptops, a lot of questions arise on how to adapt websites to a range of different devices. After obtaining analytical reports from popular Slovenian websites with regards to user devices, we compared this data with global trends in order to predict estimations for the future use of mobile devices in Slovenia. By learning modern technologies, we are able to identify the best approach to the development of responsive web pages and highlight the advantage of this method over the classical way of design. During research and development we focused our attention on the characteristics and limitations of web and devices. Our primary study was on server side optimization, in order to reduce any unnecessary burden on devices with lower performance. As an example, we designed a responsive online store and equipped it with some of the most effective optimization techniques of responsive web design, improving the overall user experience regardless of the device and its limitations.
