    Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to present an RFID system that is set up in a laboratory and used to track books and equipment inside. Every person uses an access card which is used to log any entries and exits. The system can also be used to lend and return books and equipment in the laboratory and for browsing through all the tagged items that are stored in the database. The thesis will present the basics of RFID systems and their use today. It will describe how Ethernet network can be used to communicate with the QuasarMR1 RFID reader. The reader uses four antennas that are connected using a multiplexer to track RFID tags in the room. The development and use of an application, executing on a Linux operating system will be presented. The application controls the RFID system in the laboratory and was developed using the Qt framework. To store the neccessary information about persons, books and equipment the PostgreSQL database is used. In the end, a few ideas will be presented on further possibilities of expanding and improving the system.
